Obesity Rates Skyrocket in the UK

We knew things were bad, but not this bad. That was the opinion of industry insiders when it was revealed that hospital admissions due to obesity shot up by more than thirty percent in 2009. The most common ailments of obese patients were diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Tragically, the National Health Service (NHS) predicts that the problem will only get worse as obesity threatens the health of the nation and stretches the already exiguous NHS budget. How bad is it?

The statistics for the general population could only be described as frightening. Nearly one in four British citizens is obese. That rate has nearly doubled over the past fourteen years. Of particular concern is the next generation. Britain has the highest childhood obesity rate in all of Europe at fifteen percent. It has become so bad that London Hotel Breaks are not a priorty amongst parents any more. Instaed diet and fitness boot camps have become the order of the day.

More troubling still is a recent report that predicts that 90 percent of today's children will be either obese or overweight by 2050. The inevitable result of all of this excess weight would be sharp increases in heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

In fact, we are already seeing the results. Only recently, the NHS announced that there were 150,000 new cases of Type 2 diabetes. Nearly ninety percent of these cases have been attributed to obesity.
